Pupil Voice

The White House empowers children so they can respond and contribute individually or within a team. Our aim is to help children have a voice for the here and now and to develop the confidence to take this forward into their lives outside of school and to their future lives in their senior schools.

The School Council is made up of a representative from each class (Reception – Year 6) who is elected by their peers to represent the views of all children. The School Council is an opportunity for children to raise and discuss issues as well as suggest ideas for how they can make a difference in school and the local community. The school council is led by Bella Heald (Head of Community and Sustainability) and takes place once a week. Class discussions take place at the end of each week and key points from these discussions are then raised at the School Council meeting. The School Council discuss ways they can contribute to a sustainable school and environment. They implement the school recycling scheme as well as Travel Plan, encouraging as many children as possible to walk, scoot or cycle to school. Recent changes have seen “Mix Up Monday” where different year groups sit together at lunch to further foster the strong inter-year relationships we pride ourselves on. Other initiatives include pushing for all printer cartridges to be recycled, organising food bank donations and a bring and swap clothes sale and regular meetings with the caterer about the school lunches! They take great pride in seeing their initiatives in action.

‘Buddy Bench’

In the playground there is a ‘Buddy Bench’ for children to use when they are in need of a friendly face during playtime. At The White House we ensure all children are paired with a buddy from across the school in a different year group. The buddies look out for each other in the playground or around the school. They support each other in school events such as Sports Day and it is heartwarming to see children in Year 6 cheer on the youngest children.

‘Miss Mary’s Letterbox’

‘Miss Mary’s letterbox’ has recently been installed in a central position within the school for all children to have the opportunity to write comments and suggestions for the school. Our founder, Mary McCahery, will then respond to the requests as well as solutions where possible.

In classrooms, all children choose a certificate, photograph, piece of work or any other achievement they are proud of to be displayed in frames in the classroom – gallery wall style! These frames change half termly to ensure children continue to be proud of all their excellent work in and outside of school.

As a school we are constantly listening to the children to ensure they have strong pupil voice and play a central part in improving their school experience.

I enjoy being a pupil at the White House because the teachers are really supportive and are helping me to prepare for my 11+. I can feel myself improving all the time. In my 8 years at school, I have made countless happy memories during after-school clubs like senior choir, chess and debate. The residential school trips, such as Kingswood and Bushcraft are really exciting too. Our break times are always fun, whether we are playing football, foursquare or exploring the Sensory Garden. I was recently made Head Boy and it is an honour. Cheers to 40 years of the White House Prep School!” Aeron, Year 6 pupil
