Life in Reception

At the White House, we aim for every child to develop a love for learning and support them in becoming confident individuals.  With this in mind, we ensure the transition process into Reception caters to every child and allows them to feel at home in their new environment.

Life in Reception is an exciting journey filled with creativity, exploration, and learning. Our Reception classrooms are vibrant and engaging environments where the children are welcomed and encouraged daily. Our two Reception classes focus on building strong friendships, communication and language skills and instilling a love of learning.

Reception follows an enriching curriculum that aims to motivate and inspire our youngest children. The classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum which is divided into seven areas of learning and our signature ‘Nurture’ programme takes learning outside of the classroom.

Prime areas:

Personal, social and emotional development

Our children learn to make friends, understand their feelings and develop independence.

Communication and language

We provide a language-rich environment and encourage meaningful conversations. Our children are exposed to new vocabulary through books, storytelling, circle time and daily phonics lessons.

Physical Development

In addition to regular sports, gymnastics, swimming and ballet lessons, our children engage in activities to enhance their fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination skills.

Specific areas:

Literacy

The children work on a class text each half term initially working on labelling pictures and writing captions before progressing to independent sentence writing. Our daily phonics sessions promote the use of phonics skills such as decoding, segmenting and blending. We aim to enhance the children’s vocabulary, reading speed and sight-reading skills through listening to every child read each day.

Mathematics

We aim for our children to adopt a love for numbers. We have daily lessons to enhance the children’s understanding of number, shape, space and measure. All children have opportunities to consolidate their Maths learning through hands-on, practical experiences throughout the week.

Understanding of the World

We create opportunities for the children to explore the similarities and differences between the world around them. The children develop an understanding of people, communities and what makes us special and unique. Children start learning French and Spanish from Reception and enjoy learning through songs and pictures.

Expressive art and design

The children enjoy exploring a range of mediums and expressing themselves through creating models, collages, pictures and much more. We also support children to develop skills in this area through weekly lessons in Music, Drama, Gymnastics and Dance lessons.

Forest School

Reception visit Forest School every term. During these sessions, the children independently explore, create and immerse themselves in imaginative play. The children have the opportunity to get as messy as they feel comfortable and embark on a self-led learning journey. We understand the importance of learning through play which is why we facilitate these regular visits and promote curiosity, risk, challenge and problem-solving.

Nurture

‘Nurture’ focuses on growing the children’s interests outside the classroom and encouraging collaborative play. Children learn practical life skills every Monday afternoon in four small groups, led by qualified teachers. These include community activities, financial awareness, road safety and team building skills. Pupil voice is at the forefront of planning and teachers plan the activities according to the children’s interest and exploration. Children feel secure to communicate in different environments to a classroom setting, further develop relationships and build on their passions and interests.

I love The White House because of all the clubs, the choices we have and the summer picnics! I also like that when you join the school you get a buddy to look after you. I like the inter-house music competitions because I love being able to play my instrument and perform solos and whether we win or not, it's always enjoyable!” Iris, pupil
